Formulators traditionally use dispersing aids to improve the dispersibility, stability and color performance of carbon blacks in water and solvent based systems for coatings and inks. Alternatively carbon black manufacturers can modify the surface of carbon black and tailor the surface chemistry to the end-use system for optimal performance.
Surface modification of carbon black improves ease and speed of high color carbon black dispersion, reduces dispersant loading required, and improves color performance in automotive base coats. For lower color carbon blacks, surface modification enables color development and pigment stability without the use of high shear equipment; effectively an easy-to-disperse pigment solution.
In this presentation, we will discuss how specifically designed surface modified carbon blacks can affect performance in applications ranging from automotive to industrial to construction.
